Dalits protest attack on Ambedkar statue
Mumbai:
The alleged attack on a statue of Ambedkar in Kanpur on Wednesday sparked protests by Dalits in Maharashtra, who took to the streets in several places and set a bus on fire in Nasik.
Activists of Dalit groups and various factions of the Republican Party of India participated in the protests, during which over 25 vehicles, including five Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses, were damaged in stone-pelting, police said. The protesters burnt tyres at several places, obstructing vehicular traffic.
In the textile town of Malegaon, unidentified persons pelted stones at three temples, police said.
Additional police forces were deployed in Nasik to keep a watch on the situation.
Shopkeepers downed their shutters due to stone pelting.
