BANGALORE: T he Janata Dal (Secular) leadership fears that the Chamundeshwari Assembly byelection may be countermanded. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy told The Hindu on Wednesday that the coalition government would extend all the assistance to the Election Commission to ensure that the election was conducted in a free and fair manner. But there was definitely the fear that a case was being built up in "various places" to get the elections postponed, he said. Mr. Kumaraswamy rushed to Bangalore from Mysore on Wednesday to take stock of the political developments and to finalise the reply to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi who has sent him two letters on the need to maintain law and order during the run-up to the byelection. "The Government has not so far, and will not, raise objections to decisions being taken by the Election Commission although it is a fact that it is the first time in the State that a Returning Officer has been replaced midway through the election process. Let them do anything, but we want the elections to be conducted according to the notified calendar," he said. Meanwhile, Home Minister M.P. Prakash called on the Governor and submitted the Government's clarifications to the letters sent by the latter to the Chief Minister.
