BANGALORE: Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials on Monday arrested three persons and seized from them 500 grams of brown sugar estimated at Rs. 50 lakh in the international market. The police said that one of the arrested, Mohammed Sharief, 50, had made several visits to Dubai and Sri Lanka. Verification of his passport revealed that he had obtained a visa from Pakistan. The police said they were ascertaining whether he had any links to terrorist groups in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Sharief, a native of Belgaum, is a resident of Mumbai. The Dongri police in Mumbai arrested him on the charge of drug peddling in 2005, and he was released from jail recently, the police said. His two accomplices were identified as Firoze, 57, a native of Madhya Pradesh and a resident of Mumbai, and Devendra Soni, 36 of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. They had procured the brown sugar from Deepak of Indore, the police said. Following a tip-off, the police arrested the three when they were allegedly trying to sell the narcotic substance in the compound of a hotel on Subedhar Chatram Road on Monday afternoon. The police also seized a car with Madhya Pradesh registration, which was being used by the accused.
