Dharmapuri: A rebel candidate of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has won the indirect elections for chairman of Nallampalli union in Dharmapuri district on Thursday. Thadangam Subramani elected from ward 10 assumed office as chairman. Pachiappan, an AIADMK candidate elected from ward 7, assumed office as the vice-chairman.
Indirect elections
It may be recalled that indirect elections for chairman and vice-chairman of Nallampalli union were postponed twice due to the absence of Returning Officer and as half of the members failed to turn up. In Nallampalli Panchayat Union, the DMK had allotted the seat to its ally PMK as part of seat sharing agreement. However, DMK union secretary Thadangam Subramani contested as an independent and won the election. He secured 16 votes against Krishnan (PMK) who secured six votes. While voting was on, a PMK-backed independent candidate Sivagami poured ink on the ballot papers. Her vote was declared invalid.
