KOZHIKODE : The Malabar Cancer Institute and Research Centre as part of its efforts to detect, provide treatment and palliative care to those afflicted by cancer is setting up a medical oncology department at Kanniparamba here. The opening of the department on December 2 would also coincide with the inauguration of the first research project that would be based on a survey on cancer and the possible causes in the district, starting with the Mavoor grama panchayat. At a press conference here on Thursday, MCIRC managing trustee Hafsath Kaderkutty, secretary Rema Ramankutty Menon and others explained the relevance of an association to provide succour to cancer afflicted especially those from the economically weaker segments in the Malabar area where treatment facilities for the disease were highly inadequate, including at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Two-third of the cancer cases could be treated effectively with 50 per cent success if detected at an early stage though the general belief was that cancer was an incurable disease. MCIRC would function in association with `Pratheeksha' association of those suffering from cancer. Mayor M. Bhaskaran would inaugurate the MCIRC research project and T.P. Dasan, Kerala Sports Council president, the oncology department. E. Narayanankutty Warrier, consultant medical oncologist, would deliver the keynote address.
