Puducherry: Industries and Agriculture Minister V. Vaithilingam said here on Thursday that the Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare would launch a two-week drive against the "foot and mouth" disease from Friday now prevailing in most of the villages and suburban pockets. Addressing newsmen, Mr. Vaithilingam said that in the wake of the recent rains, the outbreak the disease (known in Tamil as Komaari) had been reported causing concern to the milch animal owners. With a view to immunise the cattle against the disease, the department would launch an intensive drive. The Centre had released Rs.1.crore to implement the programme. The veterinary staff was being deployed to carry out the immunisation in all the 70 key village units in various parts of the Union Territory simultaneously. Mr. Vaithilingam said that there was the risk of milk yield going down and to stabilize milk production, the department had drawn up plan the scheme. The Director of the Department M.C. Rajamanickam was also present.
