Delay in implementaion of welfare schemes, says AIADMK leader

Special Correspondent

Wants Lt. Governor to clarify Ministry's defence

PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry unit secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam A. Anbalagan MLA alleged that most of the welfare schemes the Chief Minister announced in the Budget were yet to be implemented. The economically weaker sections were bearing the brunt of the delay.

Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, Mr. Anbalagan wanted to know whether the schemes were kept in abeyance for want of financial sanction. He said that, for instance, the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Housing Scheme, evolved by the Government, to provide subsidy of Rs.1 lakh to hut dwellers to convert the huts into concrete structures should be continued without any delay.

A total of 15,000 huts had only been converted into houses so far.

Mr. Anbalagan said that the announcement for the rise in pension amount for the aged, the increase in financial assistance to the physically challenged persons and monthly assistance to educated unemployed youth were some of the other schemes, which are yet to see light of the day.

He said that the Chief Minister was reportedly taking the defence that the Lt. Governor was yet to give his nod to these schemes. He requested the Lt. Governor to clarify whether the defence of the Ministry was correct.

He said that there was a promise that around 5,000 families affected by tsunami in the coastal pockets would be provided houses and that the Government would spend Rs.96.45 crore for the scheme. Nothing had been done so far. Mr. Anbalagan said that should the delay continue his party would mobilise people's support and launch an agitation.
