Vaiko to undertake padayatra on Mullaperiyar issue

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Thursday said he would begin a six-day padayatra from Madurai on December 18 to create awareness among farmers on the Mullaperiyar issue.

In a statement here, he said the padayatra, in which MDMK activists and farmers would participate, would reach Kudalur on December 23 after covering Usilampatti, Andipatti, Theni, Chinnamanur and Cumbam.

Mr. Vaiko accused the Tamil Nadu Government and the Centre of failing to protect the interests of the State. The southern districts would be hit by famine if the State's rights on Mullaperiyar water were not defended.

He expressed concern over the "irresponsible and unfair" statements issued by the Kerala Chief Minister.

DMDK to protest

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant said here that the party functionaries would undertake a dawn-to-dusk fast on December 2 throughout the State on the Mullaperiyar issue.

He would lead the fast, to be observed before the Collectorates, at Theni.
