Sevilla swamps Grasshoppers

LONDON : Holders Sevilla breezed into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup on Wednesday with a crushing 4-0 win at Switzerland's Grasshoppers.

Brazilian Daniel Alves scored twice to seal Sevilla's passage from Group C.

Sevilla was joined in the knockout stage by AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Bucharest and Maccabi Haifa.

The British quartet of Tottenham Hotspur, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Rangers, along with Italy's Parma, have already qualified.

The top three in each of the eight groups of five teams progress to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed sides from the Champions League group stage.

The results:

Group A: Livorno 1 drew with Maccabi Haifa 1; Partizan Belgrade 1 lost to Auxerre 4.

Group B: Besiktas 2 bt Club Bruges 1; Dinamo Bucharest 2 bt Bayer Leverkusen 1.

Group C: AZ Alkmaar 2 drew with Slovan Liberec 2; Grasshoppers 0 lost to Sevilla 4.

Group D: Osasuna 3 bt OB Odense 1; Racing Lens 1 lost to Parma 2. — Agencies
