Karaikudi: Five goals by J. Arti helped Punjabi defeat Manonmaniam Sundaranar 5-0 and enter the pre-quarterfinals of the all-India inter-University women's football tournament, organised by Alagappa University, here on Thursday.

At Dindigul, it was a day of one-sided matches in the Tamil Nadu State inter-district under-13 football championship.

Keshavan triumphs

B. Keshavan of Idayam Rajendran Residential School claimed the boys' under-11 title in the district-level chess tournament, organised by Lions Matriculation School, at Madurai on Wednesday.

The winners:

Boys: U-11: B. Keshavan; U-10: V. Goutham (Velammal); U-9: L. Mani Shankar; U-7: K.K.R. Sanjay Kumar (Lakshmi School).

Girls: U-9: K. Subiksha (Le Chatelier); U-7: K. Rakshana (Le Chatelier).

Easy for Tuticorin Port

Tuticorin Port beat Pallavan Volleyball Club (Kancheepuram) 25-10, 25-18 in a group F league match of the Tamil Nadu State senior volleyball championship at Madurai on Thursday.

Sreerangammal wins

At Coimbatore, R.K. Sreerangammal Kalvi Nilayam scored a six-wicket win over fancied Sree Jayendra Saraswathi Vidyalaya MHSS in the final of the CDCA non-age group inter-schools cricket tournament, for the Saravana Jewellers Trophy, at the Forest College grounds here on Thursday.

After restricting its opponent to 124 for nine in 45 overs, Sreerangammal knocked off the required runs in 39.4 overs, losing four wickets.

The scores:

Sree Jayendra Saraswathi 124 for nine in 45 overs lost to R.K. Sreerangammal 125 for four in 39.4 overs (Kirubakaran 53).

Ball badminton meet

The first State-level ball badminton tournament for the K.N.M. Bala-Deep Rolling Trophy, to be jointly organised by Suresh Fives and KNM Trust, will begin at the district ball badminton grounds (opposite Nehru Stadium) here on December 2.
