MADURAI: If institutions are willing to take up Research and Development activity on the field of alternative energies, the Government of India and Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) are ready to provide the required financial assistance, said A. Elangovan, Chairman and Managing Director, TEDA. Delivering a lecture at the inaugural function of `renewable energy club' of Thiagarjar College of Engineering here on Thursday, Mr. Elangovan said that the agency had provided financial assistance of about Rs.57 lakh to a college in Chennai for a solar cooking project. With the energy requirements of the nation "galloping," there is an urgent need to look at renewable fuels, as they are eco friendly and infinite by nature, Mr. Elangovan said, adding that this was a point, which the President makes in all his speeches. "Tamil Nadu generates about 3,200 MW of power through wind mills and is one of the foremost States in this sector," he said. The wind sector also has its limitations, as it is available only for a period of about 5 months, Mr. Elangovan said, adding that 41 wind research stations have been established to determine the wind velocity. He urged the students to take up research in photovoltaic cells, as at present it is not being manufactured in the country, despite the availability of raw materials and abundant skilled manpower. Mr. Elangovan said engineering students are the "nation builders" and should also work for betterment of mankind, rather than for personal gains alone
