Fuel tanker strike from Thursday night

KOCHI: Fuel-tanker lorry operators in the State will go on an indefinite strike from Thursday midnight, in protest against the imposition of speed governors.

General secretary of the Tanker Lorry Owners Federation Jacob Mani said tanker lorry operators were unable to supply fuel in hilly areas as speed governors affected the pulling power of the vehicles. The strike would hit the availability of petrol, diesel, aviation-turbine fuel, furnace oil, bitumen, and some chemicals. The supply of LPG too would be affected, as bullet tankers would be joining the strike. — Staff Reporter

16-year-old pilgrim dead

PATHANAMTHITTA: A 16-year-old Sabarimala pilgrim, identified as T.R.Ajith of Paliyankara Thundipparampil house in North Paraur, collapsed in Pampa on the foothills of Sabarimala on Thursday, according to Health department sources. The body has been sent to North Paravur, later in the afternoon. — Staff Reporter

Child fatally run over

KOZHIKODE: A three-year-old child was killed when he was run over by a mini-lorry at Poovattuparambu near here on Thursday morning. Bidu Manadevan, son of Manadevan, Aikkalattupadi, was walking along with his mother when the accident occurred. Local people blocked traffic for nearly two hours. — Staff Reporter

Health package sought

NEW DELHI: K.S. Manoj, MP, has sought a special health package from the Centre for the people of the chikungunya-affected districts of the State.

Raising the matter during zero hour on Thursday, Dr. Manoj said there was an urgent need to improve the solid waste management and vector surveillance in the affected districts. — Special Correspondent

Man killed in accident

ALAPPUZHA: Bobby Antony, 34, was killed and his brother Bobban Antony, 39, were seriously injured when their motorcycle and a tanker lorry hit each other on Kakkazham overbridge, near Ambalappuzha, on National Highway 47 on Thursday. The police said they were of Pallipparambu house, Thychira, Purakkad panchayat. Mr. Bobban Antony has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here. — Staff Reporter

AIDS Day campaign

KOZHIKODE: A campaign to light a candle in every home on World AIDS Day on Friday will be organised by the Vanitha Society, an organisation of sex workers here. Members of the society have visited nearly 300 houses, seeking support for their programmes. "Each lighted candidate symbolises support and sympathy for victims of Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It also represents our attempt to dispel darkness of ignorance and misunderstandings about AIDS," a spokeswoman for the society said on Thursday. — Special Correspondent

Inter-school Quiz

KOZHIKODE: Silver Hills Public School will be conducting an All-Kerala inter-school quiz (Silver Quest) for High School Students on Saturday. The first prize will be a cash award of Rs.2500 and a shield to the School. The second prize will be Rs.1500 and a shield and the third prize will be Rs. 1000 and a shield. — Staff Reporter

Kavirajan commemoration

KOLLAM: Mayor N. Padmalochanan will inaugurate a programme to be organised here on Saturday by the district unit of the Kerala Gazetted Officers Association to commemorate the first death anniversary of N. Kavirajan, who was a long standing leader of the KGOA. District secretary of the CPI(M) K. Rajagopal will deliver the commemorative address.

Jamaat-e-Islami plans campaign

KOLLAM: Various programmes have been arranged in the district by the Jamaat-e-Islami for promoting the 10-day `Safe Family, Secure Society' campaign that begins on Friday. The campaign is part of a nation-wide exercise by the organisation. District president of the Jamaat-e Islami P.H. Mohammed said that a seminar in this connection will be held at Pathanapuram on December 3. Minister for Agriculture Mullakara Ratnakaran will inaugurate the seminar. Household meetings will be held at 100 locations in the district.
