Bail for ex-police inspector

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday granted bail to a former police official of Bangalore city who was accused of allegedly being involved in the multi-crore rupee stamp paper racket involving Abdul Kareem Telgi, the alleged kingpin, and others.

Vali Basha, a former inspector of City Market police station, was arrested for his alleged complicity in the fake stamp paper case.

He was in custody and the case was pending trial.

On Thursday, Basha informed the High Court that the Supreme Court had allowed a criminal petition by Vajeer Ali Khan, a former assistant sub-inspector of City Market police station.

Apex court moved

Vajeer was also an accused in the case and he had moved the apex court for bail, saying that the case was yet to reach the stage of trial and that he had been in custody for a long time. He said a Division Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice D.K. Jain had on November 20, 2006 granted bail to Vajeer.

Basha said his case was similar to that of Vajeer and that he to should be granted bail.

The former inspector produced a copy of the Supreme Court order.

Taking note of the Supreme Court order, Justice Mohan Shantanagouder granted bail to Basha.
