KHAMMAM: The district administration has focused its attention on the rehabilitation of the traditional water bodies in a big way under the national employment guarantee scheme. As part of the effort as many as 680 irrigation tanks each with an ayacut of less than 100 acres have been identified for taking up renovation work, according to Khammamm Collector Sashisbushan Kumar. He said at least one such tank would be taken up for total rehabilitation from each of the 770 gram panchayats in the district. The gram panchayats, which had no such irrigation source for taking up renovation works, would be considered for construction of a new tank. He explained that there were 2179 irrigation tanks with an ayacut of less than 100 acres. Restoration of such tanks would bring about a marked improvement in the irrigation sector besides serving the basic objective of providing employment to the jobless as envisaged in the National Employment Guarantee Act.
Standards
The administration was keen on implementing the restoration works by ensuring the desired technical standards. A majority of such tanks were constructed hundreds of years ago. Over a period of time they were not paid proper attention. Some of them could hardly retain any water as their bunds, sluices and outlets required renovation as per the technical standards. In all 46 teams were deputed to identifying the works.
