CHANDIGARH: The cold wave which had gripped many places in Punjab and Haryana this week abated on Thursday but not before claiming one life in Patiala. A report from Patiala said that Government Railway Police had recovered an unidentified body, presumed to be of a beggar, from near a railway crossing and the middle-aged man was suspected to have died due to cold. Meanwhile, as the minimum temperatures on Thursday rose by five degrees since yesterday at many places and Chandigarh recorded a minimum of 9.6 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal, the Meteorological Department here said. In Haryana, Ambala recorded a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius, Hisar 11.3 degrees Celsius while Karnal registered a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius, all temperatures settling above normal range. Patiala recorded a low of 7.2 degree Celsius while Ludhiana had a low of 6.7 degrees Celsius. Amritsar had a cold night at 5.3 degree Celsius, down two degrees. In the hills, the chill continued to make people groan, with Shimla recording a low of 4.3 degrees Celsius, down two degrees. Sundernagar and Una also had a cold night, recording respective lows of 2.3 degrees Celsius and 3 degrees. Delhi recorded a minimum of 8.7 degrees Celsius. Piercing cold swept most parts of Kashmir Valley and Srinagar saw the mercury plummeting to minus 2.9 degrees, two degrees below normal. Jammu, however, recorded a low of 9.3 degrees. The Met department has forecast sunny days over the next two days in Punjab, Haryana and H.P.
