Cable operators restrained

Order passed on a suit by ESPN

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has restrained 66 cable operators across the country from unauthorised airing of the current India-South Africa one-day series .

Justice P. Anil Kumar passed the injunction order on Friday on a suit by ESPN, which has exclusive rights to telecast the series on terrestrial and satellite television channels in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

It permitted ESPN to take action against cable operators not party to the suit if they were found to be utilising its feed. It also asked the plaintiff to initiate criminal proceedings against the errant cable operators if they were found violating the order.

The ESPN suit said cable operators were receiving the signals from Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators and then routing them, not meant for further transmission, through their networks to their subscribers. The cable operators, who did not have any agreement with the plaintiff, were not authorised to transmit the signals to its subscribers through its networks. The cable operators who were restrained from unauthorised are in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh. , West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
