Reduce regularisation charges for illegal constructions: BJP

Staff Reporter

`Rates should be fixed at Rs.450 per square metre'

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has asked Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy to reduce charges for regularisation of unauthorised constructions and increase of floor area ration in the Capital.

In a letter to Mr. Reddy, senior BJP Councillor and MCD Standing Committee member Vijender Gupta has expressed serious concern over the high levy of these charges. Stating that the rate of Rs.1,550 per sq. m. was too high, Mr. Gupta said the rates should be fixed at Rs.450 per sq. m. and should be universal applied across the city.

Claiming that affected people were shocked and angry over high conversion charges fixed by the Government, the BJP Councillor also blamed the Delhi Government for this. When it came to fixing charges, it was agreed that only Rs.450 per sq. m. would be charged keeping in mind technical facts and ground realities, but the Government later backtracked, he alleged.

According to Mr. Gupta, at the time of fixing the charges, it was decided to create an escrow account where regularisation charges were to be deposited so that it could be used in developmental activities and building of civic infrastructure. But due to the negative attitude of the Delhi Government this particular scheme failed to materialise, the BJP leader claimed.

He also objected to the fixing of regularisation charges on the basis of categories of various colonies as this classification of various area of the city by the Municipal Valuation Committee was only for determination of property tax and it was wrong to follow this yardstick for deciding regularisation charges. The Government should fix one regularisation charge for entire Delhi, Mr. Gupta said.
