Call for greater support to Carnatic music

CHENNAI: A call for greater support to Carnatic music and musicians was made at a function in Chennai on Thursday.

The increased support would encourage musicians to ensure the continuance of high standards in the classical music, speakers told the function organised by Brahma Gana Sabha to honour the musician Trichur V. Ramachandran on his completion of 50 years of service to the cause of music.

S. Mohan, chairman of Kalakshetra Foundation and former Supreme Court judge, said

Trichur Ramachandran was endowed with golden voice and known for devotion to his master G.N. Balasubramaniam.

"Cho" S. Ramaswamy, Editor of the Tamil journal Thughlak, regretted that not much was known outside the southern region about the achievements of artists, writers, intellectuals and musicians belonging to the region. He wanted this situation to be corrected by highlighting their contributions prominently.

Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, president of the Sabha, and Narayana Viswanath, writer-critic, were among those who commended Mr. Ramachandran for his qualities of dedication, simplicity and sincerity.

Mr. Ramachandran said it was important that those who wanted to learn Carnatic music should listen as many concerts of veteran musicians as possible. This was what he learnt from his master, GNB. Describing the period of 1945-60 as the golden period of Carnatic music, he said the exposure, which he got by attending music concerts of stalwarts during the period, laid a strong basis for him to develop himself as a musician.
