NEW DELHI: Terming the so-called power reforms in the Capital as a big failure, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Thursday castigated the Delhi Government and the private power distribution companies for making people reel under unscheduled power cuts and load shedding despite the fact that severe winter was yet to set in.

In a statement here, Dr. Vardhan also sought a "power cut free and uninterrupted supply guarantee" from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as four and half years of privatisation had brought nothing but misery for the people and the situation has gone from bad to worse. Condemning the heavy load shedding of power throughout the city, he said it was shameful that the Government and the discoms have failed to meet even 2,600 MW of power demand and are resorting to unscheduled power cuts and load shedding. "When this demand will increase by another 1,000 MW during the peak winter months then what will happen? The private power companies are blaming the Delhi Government for this fiasco stating that they are not getting adequate power supply from Transco. The general public is the ultimate sufferer in this whole spat," he added.

Dr. Vardhan charged the Government with being hand in glove with the private power companies. The mere summoning of the heads of the private power distribution companies is nothing but a drama enacted to mislead the people of Delhi and put a lid on the wrong doing that is presently going on in the private sector, he added.

He further said that it was unfortunate that the whole thrust of the power companies was to indulge in forced recovery from consumers even if it means slapping false power theft cases. It is sad that some people have committed suicide after facing harassment from the enforcement wing of the power companies but there has been little effort by the Government to look into such incidents and take to task the wrong doers, he added.
