KOCHI: Keralites in general love to indulge in past glory and do not plan for a bright future, observed K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady. He was inaugurating an all-India IT exhibition and seminar organised by Indian Computer Education Society here on Thursday. Mr. Radhakrishnan said many Malayalis strongly opposed globalisation, but it had already set in. In the present scenario, it would be advisable to pursue a progressive path rather than a reactionary one. Internationalisation of education was part of globalisation. Educational facilities would have to be upgraded to meet global standards. Otherwise, the State would have to suffer. Self-financing institutions would be essential to enable the State to compete globally. Nevertheless, the needs of the underprivileged should not be undermined in the process of globalisation where the fittest survived. Computer education could be mastered by the new generation. There were various avenues in this field and the youth should make the best use of the opportunity, he said. Mayor Mercy Williams, V.S. Reghunathan, Senior Technical Director, National Informatics Centre; T.M. Muhammed Yousef, former Additional Advocate General, Government of Kerala; E.V. Bhaskara Panicker, general secretary of ICES; D. Philip, president of ICES, and others were present.
