dated December 2, 1956: Shastri explains

Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, Minister for Railways and Transport, said in Ambala on November 30 that he had resigned not because something was out of joint in the Railway Board or the administration, but, being a Congress worker, his conscience did not allow him to stick to the job after the serious train accidents at Mahboobnagar and Ariyalur. "I do not think I have done something extraordinary by quitting the office, but I felt it my duty as an honest Congressman to convince the public that these accidents are not the fault of the Railway administration." Dispelling the "misinformed and ill-founded" criticism that the accidents had occurred on account of collapse of bridges, he said the Ariyalur bridge stood intact, but the washing away of the embankment had caused the accident.
