dated December 2, 1956: "Vital turn in history"

Prime Minister Nehru declared in New Delhi on November 30 that the growing relationship of friendship and co-operation between the people of India and China was a force on which a lot would depend not only in the two countries but also in the countries of Asia. Speaking at a civic reception accorded to the Chinese Prime Minister, Mr. Chou En-lai, by the citizens of Delhi, Mr. Nehru said a "new strength and force" had arisen in the world after the one thousand million people of China and India, constituting a little less than half the population of the world, had broken the shackles of slavery and were carving their destiny as free, independent people. "This new strength will influence world events to a very great extent. The establishment of closer contact after several centuries was a vital turn in the history of mankind. The walls created by domination of European countries between the two countries had been pulled down and they were picking up the old threads of friendly co-operative work that existed for 1,000 years and more." In his reply, Mr. Chou En-lai said if India and China stood together no power on earth could suppress them or obstruct their advance towards progress. He said he was overwhelmed by the atmosphere of friendship towards China in this country.
