BRUSSELS: The appeals court of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has sentenced Bosnian Serb General Stanislav Galic to life in prison for the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War. Gen. Galic led the 44-month siege from 1992 to 1994, when the population of the Bosnian capital was terrorised, according to court documents. This is the first time that the appeals court of the United Nations tribunal in The Hague has passed a life sentence. Previous life sentences handed down by the lower courts have all been reduced on appeal. Gen. Galic was sentenced in his first trial in 2003 to 20 years in prison. But the appeals court said the sentence was too light as it ``underestimated the gravity'' of his crimes. Xinhua
