Chennai : Neurologists, ENT specialists, psychiatrists and dentists will participate in a conference on sleep disorders to be held in the city on Friday and Saturday. The conference is intended to help doctors understand the evolving, multidisciplinary medical speciality, Suresh Kumar, a neurologist at the SRMC Hospital and Research Centre, said on Wednesday. The conference is jointly organised by Chennai Epilepsy and Sleep Disorders Centre, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston and the neurology department of SRMC with the support of Indo-US Science and Technology Forum. Sudhansu Chokroverty, president of World Association of Sleep Medicine, said sleep apnoea (characterised by interrupted breathing during sleep) is slowly gaining awareness among doctors and patients. "However, sleep disorders are not about sleep apnoea alone. Narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, circadian rhythm disorders are some of the other problems," he said. S.S.K. Ayyar, chairman of the conference, said that sleep disorders and stress were linked. With the growing number of business process outsourcing jobs that required shift work, young people were at risk of disturbed sleep cycles. Doctors need to recognise symptoms and offer suitable treatment for patients with sleep disorders, he stressed. The conference will be held at Hotel Green Park in Vadapalani.
