NEW DELHI: King Abdullah II ibn al Hussein of Jordan on Friday called for joint initiatives by India and Jordan for setting up mutually beneficial ventures in Information Communication Technology (ICT), education in general and power projects in particular. Addressing a Joint Meeting under the aegis of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here, the King of Jordan also sought Indian industry's investments in Jordan in its drive to set up a chain of special economic zones (SEZs). He emphasised that the SEZ concept was picking up in India and so its benefits should percolate over to Jordan. The King of Jordan made a fervent appeal to over 200 Indian entrepreneurs present on the occasion to extend a helping hand, pointing out that India had taken a lead in ICT and education and Jordan, which is a small country of 5.5 million people and the gateway to West Asia, should gain out of its good relationship with it to strengthen its education and ICT sector. Besides power, telecom, agriculture and fertiliser, the King sought dissemination of Indian industrial expertise to his country in other areas like pharmaceuticals and drugs, aviation, equipment making for automobile and the engineering industry. Assocham President Anil K. Agarwal said India should take advantage of SEZs like the Zerka Free Zone as also the FTAs Jordan had with the U.S., Singapore and other countries.
