KOZHIKODE : M. Mukundan, novelist and Kerala Sahitya Akademi president, has been chosen for this year's Mathrubhumi Literary Award. Announcing the award at a press conference here on Wednesday, M.P. Veerendrakumar, chairman and managing director, Mathrubhumi, said the award carries a purse of Rs.2 lakh, a citation and a statuette designed by M.V. Devan. Mr. Mukundan was selected by a judging committee comprising veteran playwright K.T. Mohammed as chairman and Kakkanadan and M.N. Karassery as members. Mr. Mukundan carved a niche for himself among the contemporary Malayalam literary figures in modernising both novel and short story in form and content. Mukundan's works from his first novel `Mayyazhipuzhayude theerangalil' to his latest novel, `Pulayappattu' were examples of this modernisation of Malayalam literature.
