PUDUKOTTAI: The Collector, S.J. Chiru, underlined the importance of taking steps for creating awareness of voluntary blood donation in society in general and the younger generation in particular. Speaking at the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day - 2006 celebrations at H.H. The Rajah's College auditorium here on Friday, Mr. Chiru said there has been a marked improvement in the volume of blood collected through voluntary blood donors in the district. A total of 619 units of blood were collected in the year 2000 by the GH blood bank - 246 units through voluntary donation and 373 units through the relatives. Following the various awareness campaigns conducted by the Government and other agencies, 1,281 units of blood has been collected through voluntary blood donation so far during the current year. Apart from using the blood for treating the patients at Government Headquarters Hospital, excess blood is supplied to the medical college hospitals at Thanjavur and Madurai. The Joint Director of Medical and Rural Health Services (in-charge), R. Padmini, the Blood Bank Medical Officer, Government Hospital, G. Edwin, the secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society, J. Raja Mohamed, and the president of Voluntary Blood Donors' Association, Palaniappan, spoke. Mr. Chiru gave away certificates to the winners of various competitions on blood donation awareness, the colleges which motivated students for mass voluntary blood donation and the members of voluntary blood donors association.
