KARUR: Work on a new scheme to augment water supply in Karur municipal limits to meet future demands would commence shortly. The scheme, estimated to cost Rs. 1.09 crore, is expected to boost supply by 16.13 lakh litres a day to cater to the demands keeping in mind the population by the year 2021. The present population in the municipal limits is estimated to be around 78,000 and the floating population is put at 50,000 a day. As per the project proposals, the expected population by 2021 is put at 87,000. As per current readings, during summer the demand peaks, 81 lakh litres per day (LPD) is being supplied to households and commercial establishments in the civic area. By 2021, the demand is expected to go up to 97.13 lakh LPD - a whopping 88.30 lakh LPD for the target population consumption. To meet the surplus demand of 16.13 lakh LPD, the new scheme has been planned. Under the scheme, which has been entrusted to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, a new percolation well would be sunk between the Panchamadevi and Karur water supply schemes in the Cauvery riverbed off Vangal and the water would be conveyed through pipelines. The filter well would be nine metres deep and have a diameter of 4.5 metre. Motors would pump water at the rate of 1,350 litres a minute. The new lines would join the existing pipelines and water would be taken to a yet-to-be constructed ground level pumping station with a capacity of one lakh LPD on the Vangal-Karur Road. From there, water would be fed into two pipelines - one catering to Pasupathypalayam overhead tank and the Ramanoor overhead tank. The other pipeline would feed a series of overhead tanks at VOC Nagar, Jayaparakash School, Chidambaram Park, Tirumanilayur, Jawahar Park, Bus Stand and Anna Nagar. Pipelines would have to be laid to a length of 9,680 metres costing Rs. 72.27 lakh. . The TWAD Board officials conducted a special briefing on the salient features of the new scheme exclusively for the Karur municipal councillors at a recent meeting.
