Double crown for Jishnu Sanyal

Panchkula (Haryana): Jishnu Sanyal of Air-India bagged a double, winning the junior boys' singles and doubles titles in the 31st inter-State and junior National badminton championships here on Friday.

Jishnu beat local favourite Saurav Kapoor 22-20, 21-9 in just 37 minutes in the final at the Devilal Sports Complex.

The junior girls' title went to Aditi Mutatkar of Maharashtra who defeated Statemate Arundhati Pantawane 21-12, 21-19.

In the boys' singles final, the first game saw a see-saw battle as Jishnu led initially but made a few unforced errors as Saurav caught up with him and went up 20-18. The 18-year-old from Maharashtra kept his cool and played long rallies to wrap up the first game.

Jishnu stepped up the offensive in the second game and won it rather easily.

Earlier Jishnu had defeated the top seed Srujan Nandaluri, also from Air-India, in straight games in the semifinal.

Jishnu then combined with his Air-India teammate Akshay Dewalkar to defend the doubles title with a convincing 21-14, 21-18 win over Guru Sai Dutt and Tarun Reddy of Andhra Pradesh.

The titles fetched Jishnu a prize money of Rs. 28,000.

Boys: Singles: Jishnu Sanyal bt Saurav Kapoor 22-20, 21-9. Doubles: Jishnu Sanyal and Akshay Dewalkar bt Guru Sai Dutt and Tarun Reddy 21-16, 21-16.

Girls: Singles: Aditi Mutatkar bt Arundhati Pantawane 21-12, 21-19. Doubles: Ashwini Ponnappa & Nitya Sosale bt Ruth Misha and G. M. Nishchita 21-16, 21-19.

Mixed doubles: Ram C. Vijay and P. Jyotsna bt. A. Priya & Vikrant Kumar 21-15, 21-17. — PTI
