EC clarification

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission has clarified that any document notified by it earlier and available only for the head of family will be allowed for identification of other family members.

The EC, in its order on the use of Electors' Photo Identity Card in the by-election for Bobbili and Karminagar Lok Sabha seats, clarified that any document in the name of any other family member could also be used for identification of such members. - Special Correspondent

Lok Satta for debate

HYDERABAD: The Lok Satta Party has sought a `meaningful' public debate on the findings and implications of the Sachar Committee report, both within Parliament and in wider fora across the country.

In a statement here on Friday, D.V.V.S. Varma, secretary, said that such a discourse would be most beneficial if it was not centred on minority religious identity but on the concrete steps to improve the status of Muslims. - Special Correspondent

Scouts jamboree

HYDERABAD: The Bharat Scouts and Guides, Andhra Pradesh State Association, is hosting second southern region mini jamboree from December 5 to 9, at the State Training and Camping Centre, Angadipet, Jeedimetla village in Ranga Reddy district. The jamboree being attended by 800 scouts and guides from southern States will be inaugurated by the Governor Rameshwar Thakur. - Special Correspondent

Muslim quota opposed

HYDERABAD: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has opposed the move to provide reservation for Muslims and include them in the SCs list, expressing fears that it would lead to division of the country.

B. Manikyachari, working president, and Ch. Lakshminatha Charyulu, general secretary, in a statement here on Friday expressed surprise over the move, when provisions for jobs to eligible Muslims were available in the Constitution. - Special Correspondent

IAL State meet

HYDERABAD: The seventh State conference of the Andhra Pradesh committee of Indian Association of Lawyers (IAL) will be held on December 9 and 10 in Khammam. Justice D.S.R.Varma, judge of the High Court, will inaugurate the conference in which district judicial officers, advocates of the Supreme Court and legal experts will participate. Justice N.V.Ramana of the High Court will be the chief guest at the national human rights day to be observed on the concluding day. - Special Correspondent

Robber gang busted

TIRUPATI: In a major operation the Madanapalle police have claimed to have busted a 15-member gang, which was wanted in connection with seven cases of looting petrol pumps, a medical shop and a bar. According to the DSP, Madanapalle. A. Pulla Reddy, Anjaneyulu (24) of Galiveedu, Kadapa district along with his accomplice Narasimhulu (28) roped in 13 others into the gang and during the last six months committed offences involving in all properties worth about Rs. 3.5 lakhs. - Special Correspondent

Woman dies of burns

KADAPA: A woman Fathima (35) died of burns and her husband Uppaluru Shabbir (45) was battling for life due to flames that erupted from a kerosene stove while she was cooking in Proddatur town on Friday. Neighbours saw flames and smoke emanating from the kitchen and rushed the couple to the Government hospital, where doctors declared Fathima brought dead, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Function postponed

HYDERABAD: The inaugural function of the agricultural research station and `kisan mela' at Kampasagar in Nalgonda district on Saturday was postponed to Monday, according to a press release issued by the Acharya N. G. Agricultural University. -Special Correspondent

Employees' strike

ADILABAD: The Telangana Non-Gazetted Officers Union, Adilabad, has appealed to Government employees in the district to participate in the one-day all-India strike on December 14. The strike has been called by All- India Employees Federation to protest against the UPA Government's anti-worker policies. -Staff Reporter

WARANGAL: Gregory. L. Ferries, president and CEO, Ferris Consulting Group, USA, stressed the need for changes in work culture, as technology is fast changing. .

Delivering a guest lecture at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here on Friday, Mr Ferries said the industrial requirements and expectations from graduates were increasing with every passing day.

WARANGAL: Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor V. Gopal Reddy released the results of BA/BSc/B.Com/BBM supplementary examinations held in last September and October at a press meet held on Thursday. The last date for payment of fees for the failed candidates is December 15 and with a late fee of Rs. 20 December 20, 2006, he announced. -Staff Reporter

Kakinada: ` Dasama Vaikuntha Narayana maha yagam', aimed at ensuring peace was performed at Venkatnagar here on Friday. `Abhishekam' was performed to the lord with 25 holy vessels on the occasion. Mass Gita recital was organised. -Correspondent

Red Ribbon

Club opened

KAKINADA: The Red Ribbon Club was inaugurated at Mrs. Pydah Andalamma Junior College premises here on Friday in connection with the World AIDS Day. College principal A. Chiranjivi called upon members of the club to strive for combating the dreaded disease by taking up vigorous awareness campaign.

MLC seat

Kakinada: Nimmala Rama Naidu, lecturer of Y.N. College, Narsapur in West Godavari district, has announced his candidature for the MLC seat from East and West Godavari districts' graduates' constituency.

KURNOOL: Supporters of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) staged a demonstration here on Friday protesting against the desecration Ambedkar's statue at Kanpur. Man done to death

KADAPA: Peddasomappagari Siva Reddy (53) was beaten to death with sticks while he was asleep at his house in Diddekunta in Simhadripuram mandal on Thursday night. Police registered a case against M. Prahlad Reddy and four others, on a complaint lodged by Visweswar Reddy, son the deceased. Staff Reporter

MCI inspection

ANANTAPUR: A three-member team of Medical Council of India (MCI) inspected infrastructure and other facilities in the Government Medical College and the General Hospital attached to it here on Thursday and Friday. The team, comprising doctors Malati Mehra, Siddaramppa and Durganna, also visited rural health centres at Atmakur and Bukkaraya Samudram attached to the college. The team was learnt to have expressed dismay over the infrastructure and its poor utilisation. Clearance of the MCI is still awaited for the current academic year. — Staff Reporter

Gram panchayat polls

ANANTAPUR: Elections to 28 gram panchayats in the district, where the elections were not held earlier this year along with other villages due to legal problems and non-completion of term, were held peacefully on Friday. Candidates affiliated to Congress were elected as sarpanches in 15 villages followed by TDP affiliates in 12 villages and CPI affiliate in one village.— Staff Reporter

90 p.c. turnout in

panchayat polls

KHAMMAM: Seven gram panchayats went to polls on Friday. The turnout was around 90 per cent. Four of the gram panchayats including Dammapet in Sathupalli constituency were bagged by candidates backed by the Congress. TDP supporters won two panchayats. The CPI (M)-TDP could retain Khanapuram Haveli.

Alumni meet

Ongole: Navodaya Vidyanilaya plans to organise alumni meeting here on December 3. Principal K. Sagairika said that the meeting would be organised to expose present students to the successful alumni.

Exam postponed

VISAKHAPATNAM: Paper I (part 1 general English) of B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. examinations of Andhra University School of Distance Education scheduled to be held on December 4 (Monday) has been postponed due to Lok Sabha byelections and will be held on December 12, Director D. Harinarayana said.
