Bangalore: The `Janata Darshan' of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will not be held on Saturday since he is will be in Mysore, according to a press release from the Chief Minister's secretariat here on Friday. — Special Correspondent

Applications invited for training course

Bangalore: Applications have been invited from candidates from minority communities in Bangalore Urban district, aged between 18 and 25, for training in diploma in computer science.

According to an Information Department press release, those who have passed II PUC and have an annual income lower than Rs. 22,000 can apply to the Karnataka Minorities Development Board, No. 33, Ground Floor, I Main, Seshadripuram. Applications, with income certificate, PUC certificate, caste certification and photograph should be submitted by December 10. — Special Correspondent

Symposium

on TDS and TCS

BANGALORE: The Income Tax Department will hold a symposium on TDS and TCS for Central and State public sector units, banks and educational institutions on December 5, and private sector firms, non-governmental organisations and individuals on December 6 at the CPRI auditorium on C.V. Raman Road, near Mekhri Circle here, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Consumer adalat on weights, measures

Bangalore: The Department of Legal Metrology is holding a consumer adalat on December 2 for Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts.

The adalat will be held at the department's office at No. 763, 5th Block, Rajajinagar, at 4.30 p.m. and will address grievances related to weights and measures. — Special Correspondent

Pension grievances

to be addressed

Bangalore: A pension adalat will be held by the Karnataka Accountant-General on December 7.

According to a press release, the adalat will be held at 11 a.m. at the Bangalore District Commissioner's office, and all grievances related to family pension and retirement pension will be taken up. — Special Correspondent

KPSC to conduct interviews

Bangalore: The Karnataka Public Service Commission is conducting interviews for the recruitment of 13 assistant statistical officers in the Department of Economics and Statistics and 10 assistant curators in the Department of Archaeology and Museums.

According to a press release, the interviews will be held at the head office of the commission, Udyoga Bhavan, Bangalore, on December 12. For cut-off percentage visit the commission's website http://kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Deve Gowda visits native village

HASSAN: The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda visited his native village, Haradanahalli in Holenarsipur taluk, on Thursday. On his arrival from Bangalore, he drove straight to Haradanahalli and offered prayers at the Shiva temple there. He then spent some time at the residence of his son H.D. Revanna in Holenarsipur before leaving for Bangalore.

Christian council condemns attack

Bangalore: The Global Council of Indian Christians has condemned the attack on Avila Convent and School in Mysore and desecration of the statue of Infant Jesus.

In a release, the council decried the shameful act perpetrated by the "Hindutva militants" and sought an explanation by the Government on increasing cases of violence and vindictive attacks on Christians in the State.

Mine Safety Week function

HASSAN: The State-level Mine Safety Week will conclude here on December 3 and a function would be held at Adichunchanagiri Samudaya Bhavan, said Deputy General Manager, Mysore Minerals Limited (MML) here on Friday.

The function is organised by the Karnataka Mine Safety Association and MML. Mine safety annual awards would be presented on the occasion.

Deputy Chief Director for Mines Safety, Hyderabad, S.J. Sibil would be chief guest.

As part of the celebration, there would be an exhibition on mines safety at the Samudaya Bhavan.

Bank brings 1001st branch into CBS

BANGALORE: SyndicateBank has announced that its 1001st branch joined the core banking solutions network, with FLEXCUBE from technology solutions provider i-flex Solutions.

SyndicateBank was one of the first public sector banks to adopt CBS as early as 2001, and now it has brought 80 per cent of its business under core banking, chairman and managing director C.P. Swarnkar said.

"Deployment of FLEXCUBE CBS has enabled single customer view and anywhere, anytime banking, which has enhanced the scope and quality of customer service. The aim is to have 1,500 branches in CBS by 2007," Mr. Swarnkar said.

Syndicate Bank uses FLEXCUBE in providing a host of services such as 24/7 banking, multi-city operations, online funds transfers, online e-ticketing for railways, online utility bill payment, online payment of excise duty and service tax.

Baglodi dead

TUMKUR: S.S. Baglodi (84), journalist, passed away here on Friday. He was ailing for a long time.

Mr. Baglodi is survived by three sons and a daughter.

Born on March 24, 1923, in a village in Dakshina Kannada, Mr. Baglodi worked for Samyukta Karnataka, Kannada Prabha and Indian Express as their representative in Tumkur district.

Deputy Commissioner S.R.Umashankar and K.P. Adaveeshappa, District Editors' Association president were among those who paid tributes to Mr. Baglodi. — Staff Correspondent

Power shutdown in parts of Hubli

HUBLI: Owing to the work on charging the underground power cable network, the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a press release. The areas to be affected are Akkasaligar Oni, Belamakar Galli, Old Hubli, Akkipet, Asar Oni, Horakeri Oni, Old Hubli Market, Diddi Oni, Krishnapur, Indi Pump Circle, Karwar Road, Kotargeri Oni and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Elephant menace

Sirsi: Mallappa Gowdar of Jade was injured when a wild elephant attacked him on Thursday. It is said that Gowder was injured when he tried to drive away a herd of elephants which entered Kachave village. Sixteen elephants strayed into Jade from the nearby forests and destroyed the paddy crop of Siddalingappa on Wednesday. Forest staff used crackers to drive the elephants back to the forest. — Correspondent

Sirsi: The Dalit Sangarsha Samiti's Uttara Kannada unit has urged the Prime Minister to take steps to conduct on inquiry into the alleged atrocities on Dalits at Kherlangi village in Maharastra by caste Hindus recently.

DSS activists

stage protest

DAVANGERE: Activists of Dalit Sangharsh Samithi (DSS), led by Alur Lingaraju staged demonstrations in front of the city railway station here on Friday and stopped a train for over 20 minutes in protest against the alleged desecration of an Ambedkar statue in Kanpur on Wednesday. The agitators demanded that those who were responsible for the incident should be arrested. They urged the authorities to take steps to ensure that such incidents did not recur in the country. — Staff Correspondent

Dies of burns

HASSAN: Sushila (36) died at the Hassan District Hospital on Thursday. She was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after she suffered burns in a stove burst. According to the police, Sushila, who was a native of Ramanathapura in Arkalgud taluk, was married to Pradip Kumar of K Hosahalli 12 years ago. The police have registered a case. Investigation is on. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested, recovered

HASSAN: Arkalgud Police arrested five persons, including a mechanic, and recovered from them 11 motorcycles that were stolen in Hassan district and in Saligrama in Mysore district. Appreciating the good work by Arkalgud Police, Hassan Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane gave the names of the arrested as Bharatha (21), Balaji (28) mechanics from Holenarsipur taluk, Suresh (23) from Arkalgud taluk, Rajesh (27) from Ramanathapura and Arif (25) from K.R. Nagar in Mysore district. The police said while Arif, Suresh and Rajesh stole the motorcycles, Bharat and Balaji purchased these vehicles, changed their chassis and engine numbers before selling them. — Staff Correspondent

Tax exemption

Bangalore: The Director of Income Tax has accorded the status of public charitable trust to the Sadashiva Yoga Prathistana, Bharata, Foundation. The foundation is located at Hampi and was established on April 10, 2006 by Sadashiva Yogi. The foundation aims at improving socio-economic conditions of the weaker sections of society, by fulfilling their financial and material needs. The Income Tax Director has also exempted the trust from Income Tax, under Section 80G. This means that all donations made to the foundation will qualify for Income Tax exemption. — Staff Reporter

MYSORE: The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) was presented with the Civil Society Award by the UNAIDS on Friday on the occasion of the World AIDS Day, according to a release. The award was given away to the organisation at a function held in Delhi. — Special Correspondent

Training programme in biotechnology

MYSORE: The University of Mysore will conduct a short-term training programme in biotechnology for college teachers involved in undergraduate teaching in life sciences. The three-week programme will conclude on December 21 and will help teachers provide quality training to undergraduate students in the field of biotechnology. — Special Correspondent.

Reshme Krishi Mela

MYSORE: The Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute here will organise a two-day Reshme Krishi Mela on January 5 and 6, according to a release.

The mela will provide an opportunity for sericulturists from rural areas to interact with sericulture scientists and extension staff during the demonstration programme to be held as part of the krishi mela. — Special Correspondent

Music workshop

MYSORE: Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha here will conduct a music workshop on saint Thyagaraja's "Guchcha Kruti" from December 4 to 10, according to a release. The workshop will be conducted by Sukanya Prabhakar on the sabha premises from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
