IMPRESSIVE START: The Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka and Haryan got off to a colourful start at Gangotri Glades with cultural programmes on Friday. PHOTO: M.A. SRIRAM
MYSORE: The picturesque Gangotri Glades on the Manasagangotri campus came alive with different hues as it played host to the first major cricketing event after being refurbished by the Karnataka State Cricket Association. It was the inauguration of the Ranji Trophy match (between Karnataka and Haryana) being held in the city for the first time after 17 years. For a city starved of quality sporting events, this was a new beginning and the stadium, with Kukkarahalli Lake and the Chamundi Hills providing the backdrop, is reckoned to be a perfect location to host more such first class events. The inaugural programme was marked by release of pigeons and hundreds of coloured gas balloons while students of Maharishi Public School and St. Anne's Girls High School presented a dance programme.
More in the offing
Authorities said more such matches would be played in the city, which now had a good facility at Gangotri Glades. The entire stadium, which has a seating capacity of nearly 10,000 spectators, was swarming with school students.
