Overwhelming support for Telangana in referendum

Staff Reporter

Of the 533 voters 523 opt for a separate State

NALGONDA: In yet another referendum on the issue of Telangana, people of Badalapuram in Miryalaguda mandal overwhelmingly supported the demand for carving out a separate State.

Of the 670 registered voters, 533 took part in the exercise taken up by the former sarpanch of Alagadapa Venepalli Pandu Ranga Rao on Friday. While 523 persons opted for a separate State, only six said "No" and four others chose "I don't know" option.

It may be recalled that a little over 98 per cent of voters voted in favour of Telangana in the first ever referendum called by Mr.Rao in his village exactly one month ago, i.e. November 1.

The polling at Badalapuram had begun at 5 a.m. and closed by 11 a.m. under the supervision of youngsters led by Mr.Rao and a couple of representative of Human Rights Forum and Jana Vignana Vedika.

"We announced the idea of conducting a referendum only on Thursday night in the village. The turnout is not bad," Mr.Rao told The Hindu. Badalapuram has been the bastion of Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) for a long time.
