`Many historic objects lying in stores'

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The absence of space is preventing display of many historic objects available with different museums across the country, according to A. K. V. S. Reddy, Director-General of the National Musuem in New Delhi. A large number of objects remain in the stores without proper conservation and care, he said and added that at times the inability to adhere to the norms prescribed by UNESCO also stopped museums from displaying their objects.

"The objects which remain in stores too need conservation, including documentation, photography and development of condition reports," Dr. Reddy said addressing a workshop on "conservation of art work and maintenance of historic monuments" at Fateh Prakash Palace in Udaipur. India with its rich cultural heritage knew the importance of architectural and cultural objects but needed sincere efforts to conserve them, he said. He said the conservation process for historic objects to be displayed for a short while was different from the process needed for the objects of permanent display. He expressed his happiness over growing awareness on the need to conserve the objects of heritage.
