NEW DELHI: The "buy one get one free CFL offer" from power distribution company BSES has met with partial success with 96,000 CFL pieces being sold in a little over a month of the launch of the scheme. The discom, however, has described it as a major success and asserts that these CFLs would in effect reduce power demand by over 6 MW. Under the scheme launched on Id in October, 52 special kiosks were put up at BSES Customer Care Centres and select cash counters for sale of the CFLs, which were offered on one plus one basis. While the scheme will run up to December 31, the response so far according to the discom has been best in West Delhi where 34,000 CFLs were sold, followed by South Delhi at 31,500 CFLs and East Delhi and Central Delhi at 23,000 and 7000 CFLs respectively. Also, the customers showed a preference for 15-Watt CFLs which are equivalent to 75 Watt of normal bulbs and were sold at Rs.150 for 2. As many as 41,000 CFLs of this category were sold. A BSES official said substituting the normal incandescent bulbs with these low-consumption, high-brightness CFLs would lead to massive savings.
The savings accruing from the over 96,000 CFLs would lead to a reduction in maximum demand which would be enough to power two average shopping malls in Delhi
