CHENNAI: The athletes gathered at Rajarathinam for the State level Sports Meet of the Disabled on Friday may have been lacking certain abilities, but they made up with it in enthusiasm, discipline and a keen sporting spirit. The Meet was inaugurated by Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai. The State Commissioner for the Disabled, V.K. Jeyakodi, was present at the event, which is in connection with the celebration of International Day of the Disabled on December 3. About 5,000 participants from 150 organisations (such as The Spastic Society of India, Little Flower Convent and Bala Vihar Special School) from different districts across the State took part. The opening event, a yoga drill by hearing impaired children, earned spontaneous applause. Events were according to the physical challenges faced by the participants. The hearing impaired athletes ran races, and participated in long jump, shot put and a relay. The visually challenged had similar track and field events with shorter distances. Orthopaedically challenged participants raced each other on calipers, tricycles and wheelchairs. Mentally challenged participants had potato gathering competitions, long jump and races. Prizes were distributed by Chennai City Police Commissioner Letika Saran. On December 3, appliances will be distributed to the physically challenged and State awards will be presented to the best social workers, teachers, physically challenged employees, institutions and employers.
