Protest against permission to Datta Jayanti

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Members of the State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday protested against the State Government's move to allow Datta Jayanti celebrations at Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district.

Sitting on protest near Town Hall here, the members charged the Janata Dal (Secular) with aligning with communal forces to allow Datta Jayanti celebrations. "The party has shed its secular image out of political compulsions and is allowing programmes that destroys peace and harmony," S.Y. Gurushanti, a member, said.

The protesters wanted the Government to follow court orders directing practice of rituals done prior to 1975. Datta Jayanti and Shoba Yatra were not done prior to 1975, they said. They went in a procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Bangalore Urban district.
