Human chain formed to mark World AIDS Day

Bangalore: Rotary Club of Bangalore, Koramangala, marked World AIDS Day on Friday by organising a human chain from Koramanagala 100-foot Road and stretching some kilometres. Open to anyone wanting to do their bit to spread awareness about the deadly virus, the event began at 8.30 a.m. and concluded by 10 a.m.

Participants held banners highlighting the need to eliminate the virus and also distributed pamphlets with easy-to-follow do's and don'ts to protect against the infection. Rotary Club President Frank Coelho said: "The greatest problem we now face is the rapid increase in cases involving people from the educated sections. No amount of efforts will be effective unless those under risk make a concerted change in their lifestyle."

FPA India, an NGO working in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights, along with Larsen and Toubro's International Airport Project wing, held an event attended by a large number of workers and the general public.

Director, Department of Women and Child Development, A.K. Monappa said it was time to take stock of what the country had been doing since two decades and to intensify action. Social ostracisation of people with HIV/AIDS needs to be addressed by changing behaviour and attitudes.

President of Family Planning Association of India's Bangalore Branch Raj Mathur appreciated the initiatives taken up by L and T for its workforce. She said the spread of HIV could be prevented by more vigorous information sharing. Sheela Mane, Executive of FPA Bangalore Branch, spoke about the difference between HIV and AIDS, modes of transmission and preventive methods.
