Chalachitra academy's attempt to take cinema to the masses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In an attempt to take cinema to the masses, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy will organise screening of festival films at schools, colleges and public places as part of the 11th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).

As a prelude to the festival, the academy will screen films in different parts of the city. `Touring Talkies' will organise mini-festivals across the State after the IFFK, especially in the rural areas, which do not have access to international films.

Children's films will be screened at select schools in the city from December 1 to 8. Films of popular Iranian directors Abbas Kiarostami's `Where is my friend' and Majid Majidi's `Children of Heaven,' Vittorio De Sica's `Bicycle Thieves,' Charles Chaplin's `The Kid' and such other films will be screened at schools.

Street festivals will be held in different parts of the city from December 8. The films included in the `Touring Talkies' package as well as some of the festival entries will be screened at Poojapura, Palayam, Shangumughom, Vanchiyoor and Kazhakuttam.

The academy, in association with Kerala University, will organise screenings and interaction with filmmakers at select colleges. Academy chairman K.R. Mohanan said Chilean director Patricio Guzman would head the IFFK jury. Actor Julie Christie, Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, South African director Darryl Roodt and Malayalam actor Revathi are the jury members.
