`Myth over AIDS needs to be corrected'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said there were certain misconceptions about transmission of HIV/AIDS that need to be corrected at all levels. However, awareness and precautions were necessary to keep this deadly virus at bay, she added while inaugurating Dr. Anil Kalia Memorial Sneh Sadan at Kherakhurd village in Outer Delhi to mark World AIDS Day. She also flagged off the "Mitwa" campaign. Health and Social Welfare Minister Yoganand Shastri and local MLA Charan Singh Kandera were also present on the occasion. Ms. Dikshit said there were over 2.5 crore people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Since its outbreak, AIDS has killed more than 30 million people. She said the Delhi Government had taken certain measures that include setting up of targeted intervention centres with the help of non-government organisations under the direction of the Delhi AIDS Control Society to focus on high-risk core group.
