Council candidates seek vetting of voter list

Staff Reporter

`Despite rejection, many names included in bulk'

  • A candidate says 10-15 pc names in Vijaywada division are bogus
  • Many express concern over `erroneous' list

VIJAYAWADA: Allegations of irregularities in compilation of voter lists for the graduates' and teachers' constituencies continue to pour in, even as the last date for filing objections and claims is only five days away.

    G. Koteswara Rao, a candidate for the Krishna-Guntur teachers' constituency, has appealed to the Chief Electoral Officer to extend the last date in view of the need for a "thorough re-verification" of the names in the list.

    Letter

In a letter to the CEO, Mr. Rao has said there are several mistakes in the names of candidates and institutions, and also the names of many bogus voters have made it into the rolls for the teachers' constituency. Though only those teachers working in institutions not lower than secondary standard schools and working against sanctioned posts are eligible to be registered as voters, several violations have taken place in this regard.

Mr. Rao has contended that 10 to 15 per cent of the names of voters in Vijayawada division are bogus, while only the names of candidates are entered in the list without the institution's name in Nuzivid division.

He has said that in one case in Tiruvur, a person has been shown as working as principal at 48 places. Also, several institutions shown in the list have not submitted their list of sanctioned posts.

Several other candidates and interested parties too have earlier expressed concern over "erroneous" voter lists, and have maintained that the names of many an "ineligible" voter has been included.

Ch. Rajendra Prasad, a city-based activist who is seeking to contest from the graduates' constituency, has said that despite rejection of more than 6,000 applications while preparing the preliminary list, many other names have been included in the `bulk' method.
