CUDDALORE: The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday launched a two-day "meet the people" movement here to prevail upon the Centre to bring down the prices of essential commodities to a reasonable level. S. Dhanasekaran, district secretary of the CPI, observed in a statement that on the one hand the consumers were fleeced by the higher inflationary rate, and the other the farmers were denied remunerative prices. The CPI leader attributed such a trend to the unusually high prices of petroleum products ruling now. A marginal reduction in the prices recently would not mitigate the sufferings of the vulnerable sections of the society. He further noted that the Centre was procuring petroleum products at Rs.19 per litre and selling the fuel by adding a whopping 57 per cent of Customs and Excice Duties. Therefore, the CPI was of the firm view that the increase in fuel prices should be totally dropped.
Direct procurement
The party called for supplying all essentials through the fair rice shops, and to facilitate this, the Centre ought to start direct procurement. The party appealed to the Centre to increase the farm subsidy and offer remunerative prices to the agriculture produce. To spread the message, the members of the State and district executive committees spread out across the district.
