Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: Member, National Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI), R. Viswanathan MLA said that he was really disturbed to see that some of the political parties were trying to politicise the Centre's decision to grant autonomy to the JIPMER. Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, Mr. Viswanathan said that the Centre had, through its draft bill for the conversion of JIPMER into "an institution of national importance", made it clear that there would be augmented facilities to render better patient health care. No patients would be levied fees and no section of employees would be put to hardship as had been propagated by some sections protesting against the Centre's decision. Mr. Viswanathan said that the draft bill had not used the word "autonomy" anywhere and all that the Centre wanted to do was to raise the status of JIPMER (now under the supervisory control of Directorate General of Health Services New Delhi) into a Centre of Excellence. He said that should there be deviation from these assurances, the CPI would be the first one to oppose it. He said that the newly elected councillors here should be granted financial and administrative powers. There was no ground for the fear that the role of legislators would be minimised if councillors had powers. The CPI leader said that he would get, under the Right to Information Act, full details of the number of beneficiaries under subsidised cattle feed scheme. He wanted reasons for discontinuation of the scheme all of a sudden recently.
