14 killed in bus accident in Himachal

SHIMLA: At least 14 people were killed and 30 injured when a Delhi-bound Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation bus from Shimla rolled down a deep gorge near Salogra in Kandaghat tehsil of Solan district over the weekend.

The accident took place on the main Shimla-Kalka highway in the evening as the driver lost control of the bus before banging into a private vehicle, said eyewitnesses.

Bus driver dead

Eleven people died on the spot. They included the bus driver and conductor. One more died on the way to hospital while two persons succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

The dead included seven women and two students from the JP University in Vaknaghat. The injured have been sent to hospitals in Solan and Shimla.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, his ministerial colleagues and Himachal BJP president Suresh Bhardwaj visited the scene of the accident and supervised the relief operations. Governor V.S. Kokje has also expressed grief over the accident.

A departmental enquiry has been ordered by State Transport Minister G.S. Bali.
