DMK to back Dalit AIADMK candidate

Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi happy about High Court meet welcoming use of Tamil

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said his party would back the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate for the Theni district panchayat chairperson's post, reserved for Dalits.

Replying to questions, Mr. Karunanidhi confirmed his assurance to Dalit Panthers of India leader Thol.Thirumavalavan in this regard.

Though the DMK had bagged six of the 10 seats in the district panchayat council, none of the party's Adi Dravidar candidates emerged successful in the recently held local body elections, Mr. Karunanidhi said.

Want of quorum

After the election of the chairperson was postponed for want of quorum, Mr. Thirumavlavan held discussions with him.

As he was of the view that there should not be any hurdle to an Adi Dravidar becoming the chairperson, he promised the DMK's support.

To another query, Mr. Karunanidhi said he was doubly happy that the full court meeting of the Madras High Court had unanimously welcomed the proposal for use of Tamil as the court language.
