HYDERABAD: With limited expertise available in the country and nearly 30 lakh persons needing `Revision joint replacement surgery', which is performed to replace artificial joints that last 10 to 15 years, a two-day training workshop on the latest techniques for 150 arthroplasty surgeons concluded here on Saturday. The programme, organised under the aegis of Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society Foundation, was conducted jointly by Delta Group of Korea and Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) of Hyderabad. Procedures performed by six Australian surgeons specialising in hip and knee surgery were beamed live during the workshop to doctors in the country and abroad.
Comprehensive course
A. V. Guruva Reddy of KIMS, convener, and Michael Neil, an Australian surgeon, stated at a press conference that the workshop was a comprehensive course on revision hip and knee arthroplasty conducted by the Centre for Joint Replacement and Advanced Orthopaedics, a unit of KIMS. The average cost of the revision hip and knee arthroplasty worked out to Rs.4 lakhs here against Rs.12 lakhs abroad. Wui K.Chung, a reputed Korean surgeon, was the course director. He was aided by Australian faculty Simon Coffey, Rami Sorial and Jim Sullivan.
