NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development M.A.A. Fatmi on Friday felicitated 25 teachers from across the country for spreading HIV/AIDS awareness and educating students on various aspects of the growing pandemic. Mr. Fatmi acknowledged their role in shaping young and impressionable minds. The teachers, from 10 States, were awarded for their efforts in implementing the Adolescence Education Programme (AEP) an initiative of the National AIDS Control Organisation and the Department of Education to prevent new HIV infections and reduce social vulnerability to the infection in their schools. "India has a growing young population as well as growing number of HIV/AIDS cases. Therefore, it is important to educate school students on issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS and provide them with the correct information on the same. And who better than a teacher to do it," Mr. Fatmi said after giving away the awards.
Partnership
The AEP, being implemented in partnership with UNESCO, UNICEF and UNFPA, is conducted by government school teachers to inform students about adolescence, sexuality, sexually transmitted infections, basic facts of HIV and protection against the disease. It also encourages students to develop a positive attitudetowards HIV-infected people.
