CHENNAI: Biotechnology and information and communication technology (ICT) tools should be developed to create genome entrepreneurs to make India a global outsourcing hub for sustainable farming, M.S. Swaminathan, chairman, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, said on Saturday. The final report of the revised draft of the national policy for farmers fore-grounded, among other things, sustainable and income-generating farming practices, he said, inaugurating the VII Annual Discussion Meeting on `Semiochemicals in crop protection: ongoing technologies', organised by entomologist T. N. Ananthakrishnan. The report, to be deliberated upon by the National Development Council, would be adopted by the Parliament on August 15 next year, he said. The report had as its major goals the evolution of methodologies for farmers to earn a net income and ensure the economic validity of farming. Human and gender dimensions in farming would be mainstreamed and provisions made for sustainable livelihood and biodiversity conservation. Steps would be recommended for setting up community-centred food, water and energy security facilities in rural areas and to retain youth in agricultural production. Suggestions would be made for restructuring agricultural curriculum. The stress would be on a `gendered' curriculum that would focus on the role of women in agricultural production and integrating business management principles. Anil Kush, director and CEO, Vittal Mallya Scientific Research Foundation, Bangalore, spoke on `Molecular cross-talk in plant-insect interactions.' A book, `Dimensions of Molecular Entomology', written by Mr. Ananthakrishnan, was released by Ganga Radhakrishnan, honorary director, Centre for Co-operation in Science and Technology among Developing Societies.
