Research on oral cancer urged

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 19th national conference of the Indian Society of Dental Research has called for strengthening research capabilities in the field of oral cancer and for developing indigenous diagnostic techniques for early detection.

The two-day conference was inaugurated by Health Secretary Vishwas Mehta here on Saturday.

Oral cancer is the commonest cancer among males in India and it is predominantly a health problem seen in the Indian sub continent where there is increased use of chewing products such as betelnut and arecanut, apart from tobacco. Augmenting indigenous research in oral cancer is hence important, as there are no Western studies to fall back on, speakers at the conference stressed. The prognosis has been very poor in oral cancer and the treatment expensive.

There has been no change in the survival periods for oral caner in the past five in India, it was noted.
