`Rights of minorities violated'

KOCHI: Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil said here on Saturday that the rights of the minorities enshrined in the Constitution were not a favour done by the ruling parties. The recent Bill on higher education was a violation of the rights of the minorities, said the Cardinal while inaugurating an all-Kerala meet on the `Rights of Minorities Today,' organised at the Pastoral Orientation Centre, Palarivattam. Archbishop Daniel Acharuparampil presided. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

KOCHI: The city police arrested four persons on Saturday on the charge of theft, pick-pocketing and peddling ganja. The arrested were identified as Ashkar, 24, hailing from Palluruthy; Mani, 42, Chennai; Manikandan, 26, Salem; and Soman, 41, Elamkulam.

Protest

KOCHI: The Bharathiya Pattikajana Samajam has registered its protest against the desecration of Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur. A press release issued by the Samajam said a meeting of the organisation, held at Kalamassery, condemned the act by a group of anti-socials. — Staff Reporter
